How to Create a Colour Scheme for Your Home.

Updated: Jul 13, 2024

When it comes to decorating your home, one of the most important decisions you’ll make is selecting a colour scheme. The colours you choose can greatly impact the overall look and feel of your space, so it’s crucial to choose wisely. But how do you go about selecting the perfect colours for your home? Here are a few tips to help you create a cohesive and stylish colour scheme that will tie your whole home together.

First and foremost, it’s important to remember that each room in your home is unique and serves a different purpose. This means that each room should have its own slightly unique colour scheme that reflects its function and the mood you want to create in that space. For example, you may want to use soothing blues and greens in the bedroom to create a peaceful and relaxing atmosphere, while opting for slightly more bold or vibrant colours in the living room to make a statement and add energy to the space.

However, while each room should have its own twist, it’s also important for the colours to flow seamlessly from one room to the next. This doesn’t mean that every room should be the exact same colour, but rather that the colours should complement each other and create a sense of harmony throughout the home. I always advise my clients to start with a neutral base colour that runs throughout the house, such as white, beige, or gray. This will provide a clean and cohesive backdrop for the other colours in your colour scheme to shine.

Once you have your neutral base colour selected, it’s time to add in other colours through your choice of soft furnishings, decor, and art. This is where you can really get creative and add pops of colour that reflect your personal style and personality. For example, you could incorporate a bold accent colour through throw pillows, bedding/throws, or a statement piece of furniture. Another option is to add in colour through artwork and decorative accessories, such as rugs, vases, and candles. By layering in different colours and textures, you can create a dynamic and visually appealing space that feels personalised and inviting.

One of the biggest advantages of using soft furnishings, decor, and art to add colour to your home is that it’s easy to change and update as your tastes evolve and trends change. If you get tired of a certain colour or want to give your space a fresh look, all you have to do is swap out a few items for new ones in a different colour scheme. This flexibility allows you to experiment with different colours and styles without committing to a major renovation or redesign.

When selecting colours for your home, it’s also important to consider the natural light in each room. Natural light can greatly affect how colours appear, so it’s important to test out different paint samples or fabric swatches in the actual space before making your final decision. Rooms that receive a lot of natural light may benefit from cooler colours, such as blues and greens, while rooms with less natural light may feel warmer and more inviting with warmer hues, like yellows and oranges.

Selecting a colour scheme for your home is a fun and creative process that can greatly impact the overall look and feel of your space. By choosing a neutral base colour, adding in accent colours through soft furnishings and decor, and considering the natural light in each room, you can create a cohesive and stylish colour scheme that ties your whole home together. And with the flexibility to easily change and update your colour scheme, you can always keep your space feeling fresh and on-trend.
